Raiatea has a new dock reportedly built by the French government. When we arrived in Uturoa, the new thatched roof shops on the dock were not open.
Much of what we saw was on neighbor island, Tahaa, where roads and cottage vanilla and pearl industries have been recently developed or upgraded.
The tourist industry itself (ie. boat and le truck transports, pearl farms, etc.) seemed fresh well cared for... a bit more so than some of the other islands.
The day trips were somewhat interesting, but the children's evening cultural show gave us one of the few opportunities provided, on a quick visit, to get some real insight
to the personalities and charms of the people of Raiatea and Tahaa. Given the chance, be sure and get a front row seat.
